Looking to get away for a weekend or just for a day, Have you ever thought about a small town nestled in the Southern Hills?

The Mammoth Site is definitely a great adventure that is found in Hot Springs, South Dakota.

Most people wonder what you do at The Mammoth Site. You begin by taking a prehistoric journey traveling back in time 26,000 years ago.

You begin your Ice Age journey by watching our new HD 10 minute informational video that sets the stage for your 30 minute guided tour. Following the video an Interpreter will take you on an adventure around the working paleontological dig site. On your tour you will learn about the in-situ (in the original position or place) bonebed and the discoveries that have been made at The Mammoth Site.

Your Ice Age journey isn’t over yet, after the tour you have the opportunity to explore our Ice Age Exhibit Hall. See life size mammoth replicas, a giant short-face bear display, new exhibits featuring Dima and Lyuba, two of the most famous woolly mammoths discovered in Siberia, a replica of a bonehut and much more.

Take the elevator down to the lab, through the windows you will see mammoth bones after they are excavated and removed from the bonebed.





During the Summer starting June 1 to August 15 children have the opportunity to experience a simulated dig in our Education Building by participating in our Summer Programs. The Mammoth Site offers the Junior Paleontologist Excavation, Advanced Paleontologist Excavation, and the Atlatl Throwing experience.
